Similiarites and Differences in English between Sign Language and Written Language.

 

Similarities between Sign Language in English such as American Sign Language (ASL) and Written Language. 

1. The Conveyance of Concept: Sign language and written English both play a crucial role in the transmission of ideas, feelings, and information. These are organized systems that facilitate intricate forms of communication.

2. Sign language and written language are both acknowledged as methods of communication; however, they exhibit unique differences as well as certain similarities.

Similarities

1. Structures systems: Both sign language and written language have their own grammar and structure, allowing for complex communication and expression.

2. The expression of concepts: Both forms serve as indirect representations of spoken language. Sign language utilizes hand movements and facial expressions, while written language employs visual symbols such as letters and words. 3. Cultural and linguistic diversity: Similar to the variations found in written language across different cultures (for instance, English and Spanish), sign language also exhibits regional differences, as seen in American Sign Language compared to British Sign Language.

Differences

1. Sign language is communicated through gestures and visual signals, representing a manual modality, whereas written languages utilize written or typed symbols, which are visual but do not involve gestures.

2. Sign language is fundamentally based on physical expressions, utilizing gestures, specific handshapes, body movements, and facial expressions to convey meaning.

3. Sign language possesses the ability to convey various pieces of information concurrently by utilizing diverse handshapes, facial expressions, and body movements. In contrast, written language is generally linear, communicating one piece of information at a time.

4. Acquisition and utilization: Written language generally necessitates formal education and is not usually acquired organically, whereas sign language can be learned naturally within deaf communities, akin to the way children acquire spoken language.
